Green steel revolution: Innovations in nickel, iron, and ferrochrome production

Exciting News: SSAB’s facility in Luleå, Sweden, is poised for a groundbreaking transformation as we stride towards a fossil-free future.

The ambitious plan involves replacing the outdated blast furnace-based production system with a cutting-edge mini-mill. This move alone will slash Sweden’s CO2 emissions by a significant 7%.

Powered solely by fossil-free electricity and energy sources, the new mill will set a new standard for sustainability. It will rely on two primary raw materials: ✅ Fossil-free sponge iron, crafted using the revolutionary HYBRIT technology ✅ Carefully curated recycled scrap materials

Beyond its environmental impact, the project promises a host of additional advantages: ✅ Enhanced steel output to meet the demands of our valued customers ✅ Expansion of specialized and premium steel grades ✅ Diversification of product offerings, particularly catering to the automotive and truck sectors ✅ Reduction in fixed costs and the elimination of CO2 emission-related expenses

Martin Lindqvist, President and CEO of SSAB, underscores the significance of this endeavor: “The transformation of Luleå marks a pivotal milestone in our quest for fossil-free steel production. By curbing 7% of Sweden’s carbon dioxide emissions, we not only bolster our competitive edge but also secure jobs through Europe’s most economically viable and eco-friendly strip production.”

This month, alongside my partners, we are unveiling a breakthrough technology in green nickel production. This revolutionary technology not only addresses critical environmental concerns by purifying the air, water, and land, but it also yields negative CO2 metals like nickel, essential for sustainable practices in various industries.

I am thrilled to announce that Albanian Minerals has achieved a breakthrough innovation in chrome purification, all while maintaining a minimal environmental footprint. Our efforts have led us to produce the finest grade of chrome ore available, and we are actively developing new technologies for green ferrochrome production. With this advancement, we are paving the way for a more sustainable future within the steel industry, ensuring that our practices align with our commitment to environmental stewardship.

Throughout my tenure as CEO of Albanian Minerals, I’ve immersed myself in every aspect of the iron ore industry, scrutinizing geology, mines, production processes, transportation logistics, and the journey from mines to steel factories and ultimately to end-users. Along this journey, my observations have served as guiding lights, illuminating the path toward greater knowledge and understanding.

Witnessing immense pollution plaguing our lands, ports, rivers, and waters, I’ve felt a profound sense of responsibility as both a miner and an investor. In response, I’ve championed forward-thinking, innovative technologies in collaboration with some of the world’s largest steel companies, aiming to translate responsibility into action.

At Albanian Minerals, and in partnership with others, we’ve achieved remarkable success in iron ore pelleting—a key ingredient in steel production. Iron pellets not only reduce pollution but also conserve energy, emerging as the premier method for steel manufacturing. Notably, the material used in pelleting, magnesium olivine, is sourced with utmost care. Albanian Minerals boasts the highest quality of this eco-friendly mineral and holds the world’s largest reserves.
